Rhizomatous perennial herbs. Stems either all alike and green, or sterile stems green and fertile stems whitish or brownish. Stems grooved, simple or branched, with a central hollow. Leaves very small, combined into a sheath above each node, the sheaths ending in free teeeth. Homosporous, spores with 2 elaters. Sporangiophores peltate, hexagonal, aggregated into cones. Prothalli with cushionlike base, upper surface with flat green lobes. Equiseta have not been extensively collected in Turkey, and it is therefore diffucult to work out their exact distribution.
