Plantaginaceae (Scrophulariaceae için): Herbs or subshrubs (rarely small trees), autotrophic or partially or rarely completely parasitic, without internal phloem. Leaves exstipulate, alternate, opposite or whorled. Flowers hermaphrodite, borne singly in leaf axils, or in racemes or spikes, or in panicles of cymes. Calyx 4-5 sect to bilabiate or bilobed. Corolla gamopetalous, usually zygomorphic and bilabiate, sometimes with a spur or pouch at base, sometimes nearly actinomorphic; corolla lobes always imbricate in bud. Stamens adnate to corolla, 4 and didynamous, or 2, rarely 5; anthers opening lenghtwise, or confluent at apex and opening by a continuous slit; staminodes present (1-3) or absent. Ovary superior, with a terminal style, usually bilocular with a horizontal septum, ovules numerous or few on usually swollen axile placentae; ovary rarely unilocular with 2 parietal bifid placentae (Lathraea). Fruit usually a capsule, sometimes indehiscent. Seeds numerous (rarely few), often ornamented.
